The game starts with all the players on the table being given 2-hole cards each and 5 community cards being dealt on the table one after the other. The basic objective of the game is to form the best possible 5-card hand using the 2-hole cards dealt and 3 community cards. There are multiple betting rounds that make the winning pot and the player with the best possible 5-card hand gets the winning pot.
In each round, there is a dealer, a small-blind and a big-blind. The dealer is chosen randomly in every round & keeps on shifting to the left side of the current dealer in every game. Every table has set value of blinds that all the players agree to follow – called the small blind and big blind. The player sitting to the immediate left of the dealer puts the small blind and player to his immediate left puts the big blind. All the players are required to call or raise the big blind to form the winning pot before the hole cards are dealt.
In the Texas Hold’em variant of poker game, the players have 5 betting options available. These five betting options can be defined as:
Bet – When the player puts a wager on the table
Call – when the player matches the bet of the opponents to stay & play
Raise – when the player places more chips on the table than the opponent’s bet
Fold – when the player withdraws his/her hand
Check – when the player declines to bet (only applicable if nobody has made a bet yet)
Betting Rounds in Texas Hold’em
In a single game of Texas Hold’em poker, multiple betting rounds take place. The different betting rounds in the Texas Hold’em variant can be defined as:
The betting round start with the Pre-flop wherein the players bet right after looking at their hole cards. The pre-flop round takes place before the community cards are dealt. The round begins with the player sitting to the left of big blind, calling or raising the big blind amount. All the players on the table participate in the round. They can call, raise or fold.
After the pre-flop round, three community cards out of the total five are dealt on the table. This round is known as the Flop. The player sitting clockwise adjacent to the dealer begins to bet in this round. The players have similar options to call, fold or raise. However, if no bet has been made yet in the round, the players also have the option to check.
This is the third betting round in Texas Hold’em. During this betting round, the fourth community card is dealt with among the players on the table. This round is called as the Turn, often referred to as the Fourth Street. Active players (who have not folded in the Flop round) can bet in this round with similar betting options available.
In this round, the final community card is dealt. This round is called the River or the Fifth Street. The betting in this round begins with an active player sitting clockwise adjacent to the dealer.
The final winner is selected in this round. In case of one or more players being left after the final betting round the last player to bet (call, raise) shows his/her hole cards, followed by other active players (in a clockwise direction). The player with the best 5-card combination is selected as the winner as get the winning pot.
However, in case two players have identical hands, the winning pot is divided equally between the two players and a new hand round begins.
